Hey all! It’s Emily again! Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! What? How is that possible. It was just Christmas two seconds ago!
Happily though, a festive holiday like Valentine’s day leads to lots of fun DIY projects. And DIY projects don’t care if you are single or in a relationship on Valentine’s day. They are there for you in every stage of life. And this particular project looks so pretty, its bound to make you feel good.
Today I’ll be sharing my DIY Heart Pillow that is just perfect for Valentine’s day decor.
Don’t you love it?
It’s super easy using the fantastic Silhouette Cameo/Portrait.
Want to make your own? It’s really not hard!
-your choice of cotton fabrics for the hearts
(to be safe I bought 1/4 yard of each the red and the polka dot fabrics)
-your choice of fabric for the pillow
(My pillows are on the small size 13X13, so I bought 1/2 yard of a white canvas fabric)
–Silhouette fusible fabric stabilizer
– Cutting mat/rotary cutter/quilter’s ruler
(depending on the size of your pillow, buy a zipper that is long enough)
(coordinate the amount of fabric with the size of insert you buy)
Step 1: Cut your fabric for your pillow. Like I said, I made mine on the small side because I already have bigger v-day pillows that I wanted to coordinate with. But you can make your pillows any size you’d like.
I cut my fabric 13 1/2 X 13 1/2 inches. I left 1/2 inch for the seam allowance.
Step 2: Cut fabric for hearts. Because you are going to cut this fabric using your silhouette, you need to cut it to the size or your mat. I cut mine 8 X 12 inches. Then iron the silhouette fusible fabric stabilizer to your fabric.
The paper side of the stabilizer will be on the back of your fabric.
Open this file and send it to your silhouette to have it cut .
If you are making a bigger pillow, you may want to resize the hearts to better fit your pillow.
Step 4: Remove the fabric hearts from your mat and peel off the paper backing.
The back of the hearts will have a film on them and that’s the side you will lay face down on your pillow .
Step 5: Repeat this process with your other choice of fabric for the hearts.
Step 6: Arrange the hearts with the film/adhesive side down on your pillow fabric.
Then use an iron to press and adhere them to your pillow fabric.
Step 7: Using your sewing machine, sew around the edge of each heart to make sure its secure.
Then trim all the excess strings
Step 8: Then turn the right sides of the pillows facing each other.
At this point you have two choices, you can either put your insert inside your pillow and sew it closed, or you can add a zipper to your pillow and make a pillowcase.
I decided to add a zipper. So I sewed on my zipper, then sewed around the remaining edges of my pillowcase. Then I turned my pillowcase right side out, put the pillow inserts into my pillow case, zipped it closed and tossed it onto the couch. I love my new pillow. It looks so cute next to my other Valentine pillows.
Give it a try. Add a little love to your decor and let me know what you think!
